Door and window sensors are the cheapest, most useful part of a wireless alarm: a small sensor on the frame and a magnet on the moving part. When the magnet moves away, the sensor tells the hub. Installing them takes minutes, but alignment and gap matter more than most people expect. This guide covers where they go, how to mount them and how to test them. It is part of our DIY home security setup guide, and sensors explained covers how each type works.
Where to put them
- Sensor on the frame, magnet on the moving part. Abode's and Alarm Grid's guides both say to fix the sensor to the door or window frame and the magnet to the door or window.
- Reverse them if needed. Abode says that where the frame protrudes beyond the door, the magnet may need to go on the frame and the sensor on the door. Cove says the same for narrow window frames.
- Sliding doors: on a double door, Cove puts the magnet on the centre strip and the sensor on the active door.
- Priority: start with the front door, back door and ground-floor windows; see how to secure windows and sliding doors.
- Out of reach: Brinks Home suggests placing the sensor where children and pets cannot reach it.
Step by step
- Add the battery and pair the sensor with your hub or panel first.
- Check signal. Many systems have a test mode so you can confirm the hub receives the sensor from the mounting spot. Abode's mini sensor guide suggests walking to the location and checking that each signal arrives.
- Clean both surfaces. Abode says to use a non-oil-based cleanser, and not to install on peeling or cracked paint, because the sensor can fall off and trigger the alarm.
- Test the position before sticking. Alarm Grid says to hold the sensor and magnet where you plan to mount them and have someone open and close the door.
- Align the marks. Most sensors have alignment dots or arrows that need to face each other.
- Check the gap. See the table below.
- Press firmly. Cove says to hold each piece for 30 seconds so the adhesive grips.
- Test again with the door closed, then open: the hub or app should show the sensor as open.
How big can the gap be?
It depends on the sensor, so read the manual. These manufacturer figures show the range:
| Product (source) | Maximum gap |
|---|---|
| Abode original sensor | 1 inch |
| Abode mini, Honeywell 5811 (Alarm Grid) | 0.75 inch |
| Ecolink Z-Wave sensor | 5/8 inch |
| xCella sensor | 1/4 inch |
Cove says its pieces must be within 1 inch of each other, ideally three-quarters of an inch or less.
Common mistakes
- Mounting on metal. Abode's mini guide says to avoid metal locks and metal frames, which can interfere with the magnet. Cove advises a plastic spacer or magnetic tape on metal.
- Unheated spaces. Cove says not to install in non-climate-controlled areas such as garages or attics; protect those doors another way, see garage, basement and gym doors.
- A recessed door. Brinks Home suggests padding the magnet with thick double-sided tape or foam if the door sits back from the frame.
- Skipping the test. ADT's guide advises verifying the panel shows a fault when the door is opened and testing to the monitoring station.
- Renters. Ecolink warns adhesive tape may damage some surfaces when removed; see home security for renters.
Sensor installation checklist
- Paired and tested for signal before mounting.
- Surfaces clean and dry.
- Alignment marks face each other.
- Gap within the manufacturer's maximum.
- Test opening and closing shows on the panel or app.
- Battery date noted; see the maintenance checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to drill?
No. Most sensors come with adhesive tape, and some include screws.
Why does my sensor keep triggering?
Usually the gap is too wide, the marks are misaligned or the adhesive has loosened. Re-clean and remount, or move the sensor.
How many sensors do I need?
Start with every exterior door and the ground-floor windows, then add others; see alarm systems.
